Pinot Gris 2009 Darker gold colour, with a hint of caramel. The nose is classic Pinot Gris with pears, citrus and quince. On the palate, the wine is sweeter than the 2008 Riesling even though the residual sugar is similar. Pinot Gris has naturally lower acidity giving an impression on the palate of an oilier and creamier texture. Unlike most New Zealand Pinot Gris, the Mountford 2009 has lower alcohol thus leaving a higher natural sugar content. This wine has 50 percent botrytis influence. Very rich and opulent. Drink now or over the next five years. Fruit sourced from a local vineyard near Mountford Estate, Waipara. |

Estate Hommage a l'Alsace The Mountford 2009 Hommage A L'Alsace has an intense aroma profile that keeps changing in the glass. Some moments you can detect roses of Gewurtz and the mineral of Riesling and other times you can taste the pears of Pinot Gris and the white flowers of Muscat. This wine is fermented dry but the rich viscous texture of the wine makes you think there might be some Residual Sugar. The acidity is there to keep the palate fresh but not to intrude in a dry aromatic wine. Drink now or seller for a few years to see what happens. This is the first time a wine like this has been produced in the new world so there is no historical precedent for its ageing potential. |

Estate Chardonnay 2008 Pale straw to gold with wide green hue. Smokey dark chocolate with Christmas fruit aromas. The oak is not obvious, only giving a slight nuttiness. Dry intense linear structure, similar to an oak aged Chablis with good mineral and acid finish. Sweetness of fruit on the palate will become obvious with some bottle age. Expect slow maturation and long term cellaring giving a more complex wine. This Chardonnay is whole bunch pressed on a champagne cycle. One third new 228 l French oak barrels were used. Barrel fermented and matured with once a fortnight lees stirring. Filtered to a bright polish, bottled under screw cap and cork for comparison. |

Estate Pinot Noir 2008 Inky red with pencil thin ruby hue. Tamarillo's with Japanese Katsu curry flavours. Strong but fine tannins, with rich oily fruit weight, balanced by zingy acidity. Flavours are still primary with fresh plum cherry fruit dominating. This will reward those who have the patience to cellar. Aged in 100% new French barrels, the fruit is so intense that not much of the oak is showing. New barrels include 2 Dominique Laurent Magic barrels. |
